This is the role closest to the client’s actual environment. When a district has 400 devices and no one managing them properly, or a nonprofit has a Microsoft tenant nobody has audited in three years, this is the person who goes in and fixes it.
It is practical work and it matters more than it gets credit for. Most of the security problems we find in small organizations are not sophisticated attacks. They are unmanaged endpoints, stale accounts, and licensing that quietly stopped covering what people assume it covers.
What you would work on
Microsoft 365 and Entra administration: tenant configuration, identity, conditional access, license assignment.
Endpoint management through Intune, including getting a fleet under management that never has been.
Network and infrastructure work: switching, wireless, firewalls, and the physical layer in schools and offices.
Migration and remediation projects, which is where most of this work starts.
Documenting what you found and what you changed, so the client’s own people can maintain it.
What we look for
You have actually administered a Microsoft 365 tenant, not just used one.
You can work unsupervised in someone else’s environment and leave it better documented than you found it.
You are careful. This role has production access, and the difference between a good IT specialist and a bad one is mostly whether they check before they act.
Certifications are welcome and not required. We care more about what you have run.
